Northwest Loop - June 2007

Day 1: Boise, ID to Clarkston, WA via Enterprise, OR was a 340-mile day. I-84 out of Boise to Baker City was a stuporslab drone, but SR-203 to La Grande sure was a nice change of pace. SR-82 from La Grande to Enterprise was a rather unchallenging ride.

Day 2: Clarkston, WA to Missoula, MT via Thompson Falls consumed 346-miles. We took Old Spiral Hwy from Clarkston to US-95 which dumped us out in Plummer for lunch.

North Central Idaho Loop
1,130-mile motorcycle road trip

Riding The Dragon

Riding The Dragon
by KeithLancaster on Wed 24 Oct 2007 08:00 AM CDT | Permanent Link
We've heard so much about it. Motorcyclists travel from all over the country for this stretch of highway 129 in Tennessee. Unfortunately, many have lost their lives on this treacherous route. Eleven miles and 318 turns! This past Saturday, Sharon and I successfully took on the dragon.

Knoxville is close to an endless assortment of exhilarating motorcycle rides.

I remember asking John Brown about his favorite rides so far on his "Four Corners Tour." He mentioned upper Michigan as one of his favorite memories. He also spoke of the ride from Yellowstone to Cody, Wyoming.

At breakfast in Blowing Rock, North Carolina last week, we met a Lutheran Senior Pastor from Minnesota, Daniel Nordin, who is an avid motorcyclist. He told us of his multiple trips to the Blue Ridge Parkway. When I asked him about his all-time favorite trip, he did not hesitate to speak of his four motorcycle trips to the Canadian Rockies - starting from Glacier to Banff, up to Jasper and returning to Vancouver, British Columbia. He indicated that this route surpasses anything in the United States. Having recently seen Banff for the first time, I can relate to his testimony.

Making the decision to move from sportbikes and enduros to a Harley is not easy - here I document the rides, the reasons, and the insanity of it all. Can a forty something professional ride Harleys without being a cliche?

Trans-America Motorcycle Trail 2007

THE ROUTE:

In brief, the Trans-America Trail (TAT) is the end result of one man's tireless pursuit of a non-traditional motorcycle route across the United States. The TAT starts in Jellicoe, Tennessee and heads eastward. Ten states and ~4,800 miles later the TAT finds its western terminus at Port Orford, Oregon and the surf of the Pacific Ocean.

John's Motorcycle Journey

John Brown
Sold my business last fall and am currently fulfilling a DREAM to tour the country on 2 wheels! This is a "head clearing" trip...or as I like to say, "I'm not retired, just getting re-wired!" Within a period of a few short months, I hope to cover all of the lower 48 states, including a trip or two into Canada.

Rock on the Ridge - Harvest Festival

An Incredible Journey

If you've got an hour or two to spend, the tale on the website below is absolutely incredible. It's a ride report by some South Africans of their motorcycle trip through Angola. Amazing photos and an incredible read. I could not stop. The story teller (Metal Jockey), has entered the story in installments scattered throughout the thread. I think there are some installments yet to go (I hope). These guys had some serious balls.

We load up and finally throttles get twisted and the trip starts.

Arkansas Fall Colors Ride - Oct 26-28 2007

We decided that we had to go to Arkansas one more time before the year ended. We are leaving the morning of the 26th. We will ride to Eureka Springs via Mena and the pg tail. We are staying at Ozark Swiss Inn

There is a big BMW group from North Texas heading up there as well. We are staying across the street from them. Should be a fun weekend. We are hoping to get to see some of the leaves changing. We will ride from Eureka Springs on Saturday and ride 123, 7 and anything else that seems fun. We will end up in Hot Springs at the Best Western on Saturday evening.

Sunday we will get up and head back to Dallas. Should be a fun weekend.

First Aid

First aid kits for riding
Someone posted on Sport-Touring.net about what first aid kits people use on their bikes.

Since I am the most OCD person on earth as far as being prepared goes, I feel like I have a pretty darned comprehensive supply that doesn't take up much room. Here goes:

In the Givi tailbag at all times:

Aerostich Sportrider's Kit

Comprehensive Guide
Infectious Control Bag
4X4 or 3X3 or 2X2 Gauze (8)
Bandage Scissors
Non-Adherent Sterile Dressing (2)
Splinter Picker Forceps
Surgical Scrub Brush
8 X 10 and 5 X 9 Trauma Pads
Providone Iodine Solution (1oz)
Comforming Gause Bandage 2" or 3" (2)
Butterfly Closure Strips
Elastic Bandage w/Velcro 2" or 3"
Tincture of Benzoin (2)
Adhesive Tape (1/2" or 1") 10 Yards
Double Antibiotic Ointment (3)
Strip and Knuckle Bandages (10)
Antiseptic Towelettes
Cotton Tipped Applicators (2)
Moleskin
Motrin (4)
Molefoam
Antihistamine (2)
Nitrile Examination Gloves
Sting Relief Pads (3)
Antimicrobial Hand Wipes
Saftey Pins (3)
Accident Report & Pencil

I've also added a two person survival blanket.

On the XT225 at all times:
The above, enclosed in a waterproof first aid bag since it's velcro'ed to the luggage rack.

In my tankbag at all times:
One of those travel first aid kits from the drug store (basically: cough drops, allergy tablets, handiwipes, bandaids, neosporin).

Extra bottle of ibuprofen, eye drops, chap stick, stick of sunscreen.

Adventure Medical Kit's Pocket Survival Pak:* Spark-Lite™ Firestarter - current U.S. military issue, waterproof, useable one-handed, over 1000 sparkings in tests
* 4 Spark-Lite™ Tinder-Quik™ - current U.S. military issue, waterproof, wax impregnated cotton tinder in zip-top plastic bag, each burns 2-3 minutes
* Fox-40® Rescue Howler™ Survival Whistle - designed exclusively for this kit, triple frequency, exceeds U.S. Coast Guard and SOLAS specifications, bright yellow with dual mode lanyard hole
* Rescue Flash™ Signal Mirror, 2 x 3 inches (5 x 7.6 cm) Lexan™ polycarbonate with mil-spec style retro-reflective aiming aid for one-handed use, instructions on back, protective cover to prevent scratches while stored in the kit, lanyard hole.
* 20mm Survival Compass - liquid damped with groove to accept an improvised lanyard ring
* Duct Tape - 26 inches x 2 inches (66 x 5 cm), rolled around plastic mandrel, repairs, first aid, the ultimate repair and improvisation component, uses limited only by your imagination
* Stainless Steel Utility Wire - 6 ft. of .020 inch (1.83 m x 0.5 mm) mil-spec grade, stronger than brass, won't get brittle in frigid cold, multiple uses
* Braided Nylon Cord - 10 ft. (3 m) 150+ lb. (68+ kg) test, won't unravel, shelter building, repairs and much more
* #69 Black Nylon Thread - 50 ft. (15.2 m), 10.5 lb. (4.8 kg) test, repairs, fishing line, light duty lashing and much more
* Fishing Kit - 4 x medium Fish Hooks, 2 x Split Shot and 1 x Snap Swivel, in a clear plastic vial with cap.
* Heavy Duty Sewing Needle - will penetrate heavy materials, easy to grip, large eye for easy threading
* 4 Safety Pins - repairs, secure items to prevent loss and much more
* Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil - 3 sq. ft. (0.9 sq. m), make container to boil water, reflect fire heat and much more
* #2 Pencil and Waterproof Notepaper - 2 pieces 2.125 x 3.667 inches (5.4 x 9.3 cm), leave notes, memory aid, keep log
* #22 Scalpel Blade - stainless steel, in sealed foil packaging, more functional than a single-edged razor blade
* Kit Specific Illustrated Survival Instructions - authored by Doug Ritter, 33 illustrations, on waterproof paper, detailed, easy to understand, practical information
* Fresnel Lens Magnifier - 2 x 3 inches (5 x 7.6 cm), in protective sleeve, read small type in survival instructions if glasses lost, start fire using sun

It sounds like a whole lot of stuff, but the Sportsrider's Kit is only 6.5"×4.5"×2.25" and the Personal Survival Pak is even smaller at 4"x3.25".

I also really recommend Backpacker Magazine's Wilderness 911 book. It's not excessive for anyone who rides more than an hour or two away from a metropolitan area -- even on paved roads. It's always a good idea to know how to make a split with available materials, or what to do with an unconscious riding buddy when you're miles from a town.

WestWord Riders

There was a very cautious man,

There was a very cautious man,
who never laughed or cried.
He never risked, he never lost,
he never won nor tried.
And when he one day passed away,
his insurance was denied,
For since he never really lived,
they claimed he never died.

And you haven't lived until you've almost died...

fall motorcycling in New England

Living in Massachusetts, it’s easy for me to hop on my motorcycle and be in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island or Connecticut in an hour. Some of the most beautiful fall foliage around is in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

basics-of-motorcycle-touring

http://motorcycleszone.blogspot.com/2007/10/basics-of-motorcycle-touring.html

It's the Journey:

Remember the the wind, the sun, the sound's, the smells, and the bugs. That's the whole reason you are out on an adventure anyway. Look for places on the map that are green, and roads that are twisty and windy, like mountain roads, or the flat open desert highways, or the scenic beauty of our many national parks. The more varied the terrain is the better the highways will be.

LURE OF MOTORCYCLING

Motorcycling. Ultimately, the lure is, engagement with the world. The closest comparison, probably, skiing. Release from the daily grind, proximity to the raw physical world, rush of speed, noises, solitude, technique proudly acquired for accurate control.

And more. Skiing, the tug comes not from such generalities, it’s from specific skiing experiences. The actuality of a particular slope on a particular day, the actual swishing carve through the snow, the feel of the body’s weight, the ache of a muscle, the cold on the face. An intensification of being alive.

Afterwards, what do skiers do? Retire to bed meekly? Perhaps not. Vibrant in excitement’s aftermath, see the mulled wine flow, watch the chattering mouths, admire reenacted ski turns, gasp in wonderment at dangers avoided. The experience overwhelming, there’s need to share it, need to understand it.

As with skiing, motorcycling. Yet still more. A glorious surprise in hand. No, this gripping sport doesn’t cost a king’s ransom, in fact it saves money. You’re more or less being paid to do what you love. And you can do it every day. No wonder you can’t stop a motorcyclist smiling.

3" PVC Tool Tube

3" PVC Tool Tube for the F650GS
I finally got off my behind and made up a PVC tool tube for my F650GS. I have these on both of my XT225s and love them.

Here's the write up for the XT225-- the only difference with the F650GS was that I drilled two small holes in the skid plate to mount the angle bracket. I also installed two screw caps instead of a screw cap and a plug cap, so that I can open the tool tube from either end.
Tool kit
In the tool tube, I keep:
* 5-14 mm sockets
* 1/4" socket wrench
* Extension for the 1/4" drive sockets
* Folding hex keys
* Folding torx keys
* 13-in-1 ratcheting screwdriver
* Small vice grip
* Cable ties
* Roll of electrical tape
* Roll of Rescue Tape
* 1 pair of vinyl gloves
